Not a bad idea, but not sure this is the right way to fix it. Bad drivers are just a part of the road in general. Every city, state and country has their share of bad drivers. And if you want to get rid of older drivers, setting a lower age maximum seems like it would work. I wonder if anyone has some stats from the insurance agencies to see if older drivers are more accident prone.
These "bad drivers" have already passed a driving test, so I don't think when forced to take a test again that they will fail this time. Usually bad drivers are those who simply aren't paying attention, but when they take a driving test 100% of their attention is on passing the test. Plus, I have no idea how much extra money it would cost for all these extra regulations that will probably make a minimal difference - just doesn't seem worth it. and damn, the dmv is so slow already w/o making them do all this added work.
I think the money part helps get rid of bad drivers. Those who don't have money are more likely to not have good cars and not have insurance and those are really the people who you need to worry about. For someone driving a junkyard car, they're more likely to not car about damaging their car.
Honestly, I always hated taking the driving test just because I feel like the test proctor never smiles and they always seem like they're pissed at you.
DMV won't change it...think about the amount of fees they would lose if they weeded out elderly and bad drivers. And for every bad driver that totals their car, they get even more fees when they get new one.
All the comments are good. It amazes me that living in the UK, there are some eldrely drivers on the road that have NEVER had a driving licence, they started driving before they were even required. Most of the near accidents I have had have been with elderly drivers and I have witnessed a few elderly drivers. They are a nuisance, as well as people driving whilst talking on phones etc. I took the written and practical test in the UK *AND* the USA. The UK has one of the hardest driving tests to take in the world, apart from Germany. The practical test in the US is a joke.........sorry
It's not realistic. The costs would be huge, people get better at driving over time not worse. It's better to take people off the roads as they commit offenses simply because it's not feasible to do it any other way once they have a license.
In some circumstances you can, but only cases where the person sustained an injury that impairs their driving, or if they are elderly it helps to routinely make them take a test as you don't know at what point their health will deteriorate and affect their driving, plus it's a more managable chunk of the population for a shorter duration.
