If you are hungry and it takes two $5 footlongs to fill you up, you have to pay for two right? A seat on a plane is something you buy. If you need two to fit, then you should pay.

If you have to use two seats, then you should pay for two seats. An interesting dilemma arises when there's a difference in opinion (between airline and customer) relating to whether or not one needs to use two seats based on one's size.

This is so true. I get a feel that a lot of people, on the bus for example, will try to squeeze through spots thinking they can fit but end up knocking people down in the process.

I have actually sat next to someone who not only took up two plane seats, but paid for two seats (because I asked him). This was 1988 and this man was HUGE and sat in his two seats eating a HUGE garbage sack FULL of cookies....I am *NOT* lying.......... and spent the whole flight eating said cookies. He took up two seats and I think that people that take up two seats should pay for them. Simple as.

I can understand how it would feel embarrassing for someone to have to buy 2 seats, but on the other hand, how would you feel having to sit next to the guy who squeezed into just one??

Squeezing into one when you need two is your problem. It becomes my problem when you come into MY part of the seat.

Exactly right. Note: I am speaking as someone who until recently :-) did buy two seats. I did so out of courtesy. My weight was my fault and my issue, and I wasn't going to encroach on the person next to me. The airline sells SPACE. If you are (as I was) too large for the space that one ticket affords you, it is not the responsibility of the person next to you to surrender part of the space they paid for in order to accommodate you. It is your responsibility to accept the fact that you need more space and take the appropriate action.
