Doesn't sound racist more like common sense. If they are dressing with gang colors, then they are looking for trouble. I've seen the movie Boyz in the Hood and that was all the education I needed.
Yes, it's racist - b/c you're basing a thought or feeling toward someone on their race. Is it a bad thing to be racist in this circumstance? No. Nor is it ever a bad thing to be racist, just so long as you don't allow it to discriminate in your actions.
This might be off topic but is it wrong to discriminate someone based on the way they dress? gang attire for example? So where do you get to draw the line?
discrimination based on people's appearance is always wrong. all people should be treated the same and fairly regardless of how they look. i do think it's okay to be racist (everyone's entitled to think however and whatever they want), just so long as you don't allow it to affect your actions towards others.
So if you're walking down the street, and on one side there are a bunch of people wearing gang attire and on the other a bunch of people in business suits. You're saying it's wrong to cross the street because it's discrimination? I wonder how many times you've been jumped.
This is complete Straw Man. My argument is that all people should be treated the same and fairly. Walking on the other side of the street certainly is not affecting anyone else in this circumstance, which I’m sure you’re aware of – therefor it’s certainly not wrong. And further regarding your point: it’s certainly not wrong to be fearful of certain people b/c you’re racist against them, but it is wrong to treat them unfairly b/c you’re racist. I’m sure you’re aware of all the historical issues and problems that have occurred b/c people failed to treat others fairly. Yet, we still have a hard time acting how we should toward others.
Well, I see is that you must convince yourself that the actions you take which is led from racial motivated thoughts are correct and thus convincing others of your correctness might be hard in this society.
The question itself is racist. Would you fear Caucasian-American teens who were dressed in gang attire any less? If the fear is because of the gang attire, which is justified, then there is no reason to distinguish African-Americans. If the fear is because they are African-Americans then it is racist.
I always thought racism is when you treat one race less than another race. If you are simply afraid of another race, I don't think it is racism at all, just stereotyping.
it is not racist. the majority of the time you're instincts are right. in these crazy times if you're wearing gang colors ur up to no good it doesnt matter what race you are.
