Outside of what is already doing, it seems like an appropriate response to the situation. This is not Bush leaving Katrina victims stranded, Obama's response so far is fine with me.
Maybe not so much more, but just different. Because I feel the amount of effort has been adequate, but what they have done with that effort has just been inefficient (i.e. stupid). They should definitely have achieved better results by this point with the effort they've made. Actually, when you act inefficient, you should then be required to make more of an effort - so they should have been doing more. They should definitely have achieved better results by now.
At least he didn't fly over the area like Bush...Obama held a press conference after actually walking the beaches and seeing the devastation. & he canceled his trip to Indonesia and Australia to go to the Gulf. This is his 3rd trip to LA (2nd in 8 days) since the spill.
What else can they do? It's not like governments are these magical beings that can do anything... The whole mess is at the fault of BP and the owner of the rig; they should be the ones doing more to fix the situation.
But isn't the anger and pressure of multiple environmental organizations in addition to all the people living on the coastline enough? These people and organizations are in their own way representing the government. Otherwise, I would question the US's core foundation as a republic...
In theory, that's what America wants but I don't think it's even remotely there. You might have a few cases where non governmental organizations are able to hold companies but I believe the problem is that we're focusing on fixing things after the fact as oppose to holding companies accountable before incidents like this happen.
As Dale Carnegie said, a tooth ache to an average person is a lot more important than <insert tragic incident farther away>
Anyways, I do see what you're getting at, BP's stock prices did dip but I don't think that matters much to the environment's point of view.
What more can the president really do... He's not like a superman who could swim to the bottom of the gulf and plug it... more realistically, the only people experienced enough to solve this problem are the ones who made it...
irontick69, I agree to a point. BP should stop the leak. That should be *their* only priority at this point. Once they've got it stopped, they can join the effort below.
The federal government's priorities should be, in this order,
1.)Contain the spill. Keep as much of it in one place, out in the gulf. That buys time to figure out how best to deal with it.
2.) What they can't contain, keep it from reaching shore.
3.) What reaches shore, clean it up. Use the military, use the coast guard, use out of work citizens. Charge the work back to BP.
4.) Compensate the victims. BP already set aside $20B at Obama's request. Start paying the victims. NOW. Then turn around and chage it back to BP. The government has a hell of a lot better chance of getting the money from BP in a timely manner than the average man does.
Finally.) Place the blame.
Saying "I'm as mad as anyone" and "I'm looking for an ass to kick" does NOTHING. Stop looking for one to kick, get off yours, and take control of the situation.
They need to hire you because it's getting out of hand. No one is taking responsibility for this. I know BP's position is strictly for financial reasons but in the end they need to pay for this.
Actually, when you act inefficient, you should then be required to make more of an effort - so they should have been doing more. They should definitely have achieved better results by now.
