Depends on what you are doing for me. if it's repetitive menial labor work, then music is nice. But if it's any sort of creative input work I can't think clearly enough with music distracting me.

For studying and really heavy concentration, I prefer a type of constant humming noise

Techno is probably one of the last genre I'll listen to for deep concentrations

Ambient music helps me a lot. Boards of Canada and Dntel do wonders for me when studying

Ambient Electronica (when coding for web design!)

I agree that for creative work having music on in the background doesn't really work. Generally what I do is take time to listen to a song I deem "awesome" and then turn it off and get to work - puts me in the right mindset!

I like to think that it helps me because I enjoy it, but realistically I think it hinders my thinking. Of course, my opinion is based of listening to music with lyrics and other distractions that make me want to sing along etc. Perhaps soothing or extremely relaxing music may help although I haven't tried studying with that sort of music before. Now when working I think productivity can be increased depending on what work you are referring to. It all depends on the situation and what specific music genre it is.

studying and working are two different thing.
studying- no way
chores or other physical tasks- yes

also look at the gender break down. it kinda goes against the stereotype that women are better multi-taskers than men. lol
