Support for soccer/football has come along way and been slowly increasing for a while now. American football, baseball, and basketball are still more popular but the growth of MLS and recent good results in the confederations cup all have fueled more interest in the sport. It's a combination of all of these things. We're no longer just happy to be just qualifying for the world cup. I think many people expect the team to do well, maybe not win, but get out of the group stage yes.

If you're a U.S. fan, and saw that last game (U.S. vs. Algeria) - then I think you'd understand all they hype.
And for all of you who did see that game: Holy bleep, that was amazing!!!!

I took my lunch break 2 hours early and was so happy I did. Today is a great day in U.S. soccer history! Americans have proven we can play with almost any team in the world. We are not at the level of being favorites yet, but we're certainly contenders at any tournament from here on out.

I think that the hype has always been there, granted it may have grown a little, but the main reason it seems like there is more hype, is technology. So many more people are using Twitter and Facebook and other media sites that EVERYONE knows about it, and can be constantly updated by what's going on during the game even if they can't watch it. This just makes us more aware that everyone is watching it.
