QUESTION:

Are people the same religion as their parents because they were brainwashed?

Isn't it interesting that people are often the same religion that's prominent in their community. That suggests that they didn't choose their religion through an honest examination of the evidence.

Not necessarily, but it does appear to happen that way. I have met and know plenty of people who go to church but no longer consider themselves a member of that specific faith. Partly I believe because they are so used to that being an aspect of their life they would feel as though they lost something to no longer go, even though they don't believe in it's teachings anymore.

but this is slighty askew from the poster's main question. But I say yes to it as well. I have some 3-4 year old cousin's that definitely appear to be brainwashed.

This is indeed a good observation. And it makes me wonder that most people who are of this type haven't really thought it through. (Though science kind of disproves everything)

From a sociological standpoint, religion is just another byproduct of someone's culture, like language or dress. it isn't any different than any other traditions that a family may carry out. It isn't necessarily brainwashing in my opinion, as opposed to tradition.

Well when I was growing up we didn't really go to church so I guess maybe that's why I didn't grow up with strong religious beliefs. It wasn't until I was an adult that I started going to church and got baptized, so I pretty much chose my own religion. I do not believe its brainwashing to raise your children in a certain faith, its just the religion that called to you the strongest. As adults we all have the right to make our own decisions and if we chose to change religious beliefs then we have that right.

For the most part, I think it IS true. Just my opinion, but I think the location where you grew up is just as important as what your parents / family believe. And I don't say it's 'brainwashing', but just because your family or the place you grew up in believes something doesn't mean it's right. However, some people will literally KILL you because your belief is different than theirs, even though they've never even investigated a religion
