Yes, they should have. That's why they won 3, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.

Story wise, Avatar was nothing we haven't seen before, but visually it was great. He took audiences to a different place and raised the bar for 3D films.

I'm glad Avatar didn't win Best Picture though because the other films and The Hurt Locker were more deserving.

it was a very well done movie visually, but the story-line was basicly just Pocahontas with blue cat people.
