DAMN good question! I think when I was young, I would sometimes keep it. The extra little money was worth more to me than bad karma. Nowadays, I always give it back because the value of being a good person is more valuable to me.
Taking something that you know is not yours - where do you draw the line? To me it's stealing one way or the other, but when does your conscience kick in?
We all know that karma is real, but when we are handed with money that easy it's hard not to take it. But with my experience, (for some reason this happens to me a lot) and everytime I give it back to the cashier, their gratitude and expression is just much worthy than the extra change.
If I know that there's extra cash given to me right away, I would return it back if it's 5 minutes later and the line is really long then I'm not going to stop the line from moving by walking up to the cashier.
I'd give it back. There was one time when a guy at Jamba Juice accidentally gave me $5 (he looked tired). I noticed it on my way out and gave it back to him. He gave me a free bag of Pirate's booty cheese puffs to go with my smoothie. It was a nice bonus on top of the gratitude. :p
