I'm not afraid of the dark when someone is with me, but by myself---my mind starts to play tricks on me. When my wife goes on business trips I sometimes sleep with the radio on 60min sleep timer. I listen to Jason Smith on ESPN. In the dark, clothes on chairs become monsters and any sound I hear makes me take notice. My all-time dark no no is leaving the closet door open. I always imagine seeing the whites of someone's eyes starring at me. Did I make the hair stand up on the back of your neck?
Hell yeah I get scared of the dark. Worse: in the dark by myself. Worst: In the dark by myself and it's quiet. Absolute worst: dark, by myself, quiet, middle of the night, going to the bathroom and imagining seeing someone behind you in the mirror.
I'm not afraid of the dark itself, just what I imagine is in it. I have childish fears: velociraptors, zombie, deformed sub-human lifeforms, and those wolves made of grass from 'Lady in the Water.'
