QUESTION:

Are MUNI fares too expensive?

Based on citations, the MTA estimates that 15 to 30 percent of its riders are fare evaders; that’s anywhere from $206,000 to $452,000 a day in lost revenue. Are prices too high?

Seems like they're increasing prices to make up the lose from people who are not paying. That's hardly fair.

But I don't think they're too expensive and hopefully they'll spend the money on extra security and crime prevention. Damn Trouble makers.

Sadly they're not going to increase the security, the reason why they're increasing the Fares is because the state can't continue to support municipalities like the could before, so they're forcing things like Muni to raise their fares and start limiting their service. Muni could prevent this by taking away the employee lifetime health insurance policy which is costing the states millions. Of course they can't do that because Muni is run by a big corrupt union that makes or breaks politicians.

I take muni everyday. And everyday, I mutter at least once how much muni sucks. Delays, fare evaders, delays, homeless smells, delays, overpaid employees, the crippling union, breakdowns, accidents, graffiti, more delays, etc.

But even with the recent fare hikes, it is still WAY cheaper than driving. $60/month vs gas + parking + maintenance. Maybe it's because I take the tunnel, but I just don't see how muni could be too expensive.

I don't think MUNI is very expensive comparably. However, I do think they could bring the costs down for their paying costumers if their service was run better.

I think MUNI seems expensive because we don't get much for our money. The buses/trains are dirty, the drivers are disgruntled, and there are frequent delays. If the service was good, then I think people would complain less about the cost.
