I think it's impossible. Networks/cable don't want to air soccer. Why? Because the only chance to make a buck is at halftime. Maybe soccer might have a chance if the rules allowed for tv timeouts.

The U.S. hosted the women's world cup with great success, all kids growing up have soccer leagues available to them, professional leagues have been created in the U.S., and yet in still there's been minimal if any success for popularizing soccer in the U.S. I see no hope for it to become a top 3 sport, since it'd have to surpass boxing, golf, poker, tennis, hockey, nascar, and who knows what else before it even gets close to knocking out one of the top 3 of baseball, basketball, and football.

I'm not a fan of NASCAR, but Jimmie Johnson (NASCAR driver) was named AP athlete of the year.
