Kind of confusing question... I've never heard that science PHD's are like engineers... Or are you referring to computer science PHD? Well if that's the case, most end up being professors or go into research...

both engineers usually implies more practical implications while scientists implies more research and theory. For example, computer engineers versus computer scientists.

well if you think how an engineer designs the working mechanics of a car, the mechanic is just the frontman to describe in layman's terms what is wrong with the car. same sense with research PhDs. they discover and design the drugs to treat cancer, while I feel MDs just apply them (like a mechanic)
