American culture is fucked. It's because we don't equate sex with love. If we did, everyone would be talking about it openly. How many movies do you see where a the guy/girl slap each other around and blow up a building before they fuck? What we have done is replaced sex with violence. Sex is a dark subject. No one wants to talk about that.
Anyways... A lot of sex scenes in movies are so unnecessary. Showing us 5 minutes of them doing it isn't crucial to the plot of the story at all unless of course something unexpected happens during the scene but usually they never happens.
Since when is sex "hush hush" in our society? Its in the news, entertainment, and how we market just about everything. I've actually heard radio ads for "Worlds Sexiest Pizza".
Try talking about sex at the dinner table. The "birds and bees" talk is always an awkward experience. Try talking about sex with your friends, cousins, and coworkers. They'll think your a pervert. Even talking about sex with your lover can be strange. Anyone that uses sexual imagery in media/advertising successfully is really just tapping into our unconscious fascination for violence.
I don't think sex is a common topic for the traditional family dinner table, and obviously the "birds and bees" topic is awkward for the adult and curious child. But equating it to violence across the board? Perhaps thats the case for some individuals, but sex is a normal part of human behavior and one of the pillars in our relationships with our partners. There is nothing wrong or violent about that. Guess it depends on your perception of it though.
"How many movies do you see where a the guy/girl slap each other around and blow up a building before they fuck?" .... I don't now about the building part but the rest of it sounds pretty okay by me!
Seriously though, if one can't talk about the topic of sex with partners and friends, then maybe that individual should question the openness of those relationships and/or how repressed their attitudes may be towards this particular subject. I don't think it's that dark of a subject after all. Good or bad, we as a society embrace individual sexual preference/nature and tolerate it in mass media more in this country, and in any other part of human history.
