Do you think long-distance relationships (in 2 different hemispheres) could really work?

It could work for a while maybe, but long term I don't think so. Relationships and what you get out of them rely a lot on physical stuff and I'm not just talking about sex. More like eye-contact, kisses in the morning, and shoulder rubs me thinks. Great question tho.

I think this doesn't work for relationships where either party can't keep hands off of each other and constantly wants to physically see each other. Other wise, with skype, twitter, facebook and instant chat, i don't see why this wouldn't work out.

My dad told me some old chinese saying that if two people are meant to be, it doesn't matter if there are thousands of miles between them, there is always a line that connects them.

My college senior thesis was on this topic. My thesis proved that it long distant relationships in this time period is actually close to impossible. There are too many mediums (computers, phones, texting, video chat etc) that create high expectations causing fights, jealousy, distrust, etc. If your significant other doesn't respond within 10 minutes of your text, or IM you right back it can cause major problems. I also studied couples who dated long distance 50 and 30 years ago and they didn't have any problems with communication and jealousy. They used letters and the phone as a main way to communicate. There are the few couples that can succeed long distance, but this requires trust, patience, and a long-term plan to make it worth it.

Sounds like the problem is attention span? Also I think you were trying to say your thesis argues as oppose to proved. ( You can't proved anything with a thesis, but you can argue with one)

No, not really attention span but expectations of immediate communication using today's mediums. The outcome of my thesis proved ldr couldn't work. I came into it open to whichever side would win. Due to the previous studies and my own it proved it could not work. Even people I meet today say that it is almost impossible to maintain one.

I didn't study the effects of ethnicity but I interviewed people of all different races.
