So, black/charcoal slacks with (dark) brown shoes - ok or no-no? This one always gets me confused.

charcoal/gray with brown - emphatic yes. black slacks and brown shoes - just make sure your top has a neutral color to tie it in.

Half the time I get dressed I just wear whatever's easiest to grab. For example, not until now did I even realize I was wearing a blue shirt today.

When I said "half the time" - that was an error. It's more like 95% of the time I don't pay attention. I say 95% b/c although I can't recall the last time I paid attention to what I wore, I know at some point I have.
Of course though, I've had a friend say I need to go on some TV show where they remake your wardrobe. I don't know what she's trying to say.

@ reegsta:
My wardrobe is such that I get compliments on what I wear, from people I see regularly, when what I wear is just normal for other people. I get things like, "Wow, you look nice - since when have you tucked in your shirts?" If I dress to a normal standard, then people get surprised and compliment me.
