it certainly seems discriminating. Maybe you can say if you choose to use more than one seat you need to pay more - but simply saying you pay more b/c of weight doesn't seem right.

Well we do that with luggage and that's by weight as oppose to volume.

I'm not a lawyer or anything, but I don't think discrimination laws apply to possessions.

discrimination law is a law and laws are made by people thus people can change laws, like it's okay to steal land from the native Americans.

Yeah, I don't think you charge overweight people, but if the person takes up more than one seat, then that's a different question.

Easily fixed by making smaller seats - toddler sized such that every adult would have to buy at least one seat.

I'm not following. You pay per seat now.

Yes you would pay per seat but since the seats are so small, you are now charging for volume so in a sense you are charging for overweight people assuming that all overweight people take up more volume.

good luck w/that strategy. toddler seats would be extremely uncomfy (not to mention how uncomfy flying can be already), and i think that airline would lose a lot of business - more than what they would recoup in charging people for an extra seat, not to mention the extra charge would drive people to their competitors.

Or you would be able to put more people on the airplane thus reduce the overall cost per seat. But you would be giving up comfortability. I'm not sure which one is more important.

if we made different sized seats that would kinda be discriminating... so you're saying that there should be a toddler row and an overweight row? i don't get it

I was saying all seats would be toddler seats and all adults will be forced to buy enough seats that can hold them. So a skinny adult would need 2-3 toddler seats and an sumo wrestler will need to buy 6 seats.

Only if they would discount underweight people. Gotta keep it consistent.

They should charge by the seat, not by the pound. If you take up 2 seats, then you should pay for 2 seats.

agreed... if you're takin up 1/2 of my seat, you should pay for it. But wait, if there's medical reasons why the person is fat, maybe there should be little leniency...

Isn't that a bit racist? I mean, you charge the fat people MORE than skinny... I find it racist, so no.

Not racist at all. It's a space thing. You buy a seat on a plane, if you take up more than the space allocated, then you must pay for 2 seats. It's that simple.
