I respect singers more if they write their own songs. The songs have more meaning to them and comes out when they sing them. For instance, not too many people know of the name Max Martin of Sweden but he is arguably the most successful songwriter of the last 15 years. You've sang tons of his songs the past 15 years and didn't even know it.
