Ironically, half of the things that I buy make me second guess if I actually needed it even though I don't buy much things at all.

buy it or don't buy.... but either way, i try to be 100% on the decision.

You could totally avoid it by keeping your receipts.

I would wait a week (or so) and if you still really want it as much as the day you saw it, you won't regret it. For sale items, that's a whole different thing. Assess your list of things you need or have been trying to purchase and see if it fits in. It its a steal though you should buy it! I shop a lot...

For me personally I just do moderate research on the product before I buy it. That way I know what I'm getting beforehand and can better assess the benefits and drawbacks of buying it.
