Other than your spouse, it seems there's just no time to actually build a friendship unless it's at work.

Yes and there are lots of reasons why. More priorities, less tolerance, better sense of self...

What do you mean better sense of self? It sounds like a fluffy way of saying selfish.

Not at all. What i mean is that you are more established in personality and character when you get older. Ideally, this would mean you have a developed sense of right vs. wrong, likes vs. dislikes. Being more self-aware, you have a better idea of what you do and what you don't want in your life and what is good for you vs. what isn't.

At a younger age, most people don't have this type of structure and are more susceptible to peer pressure, etc. Determining factors in relationships at a young age.

I think they are harder to make because as you get older you get married, have families, jobs, and hobbies. All these things take up your time which decreases the amount of time you have to devote to a friendship. I know I have no friends left from school because we all grew apart and got our own lives.
