Avatar was definitely deserving because it had critical acclaim and box office mojo and pushed film technology storytelling to the limits, but my choice would have been Inglourious Basterds (Tarantino's best film in my opinion). Saw Precious - moving piece, didn't have enough box office. The Hurt Locker - didn't know this movie existed, shame on their distributor for not putting money behind it. Up in the Air - was this a stoner movie? The globes tend to be more middle of the road and safe bets with their winners. Look for the Oscar's voters to have the courage to roll the dice and choose one of the others. Tarantino is my bet.
The Sky People have sent us a message... That they can take whatever they want. That no one can stop them. Well we will send them a message. You ride out as fast as the wind can carry you... You tell the other clans to come. Tell them Toruk Makto calls to them! You fly now, with me! My brothers! Sisters! And we will show the Sky People... That they can not take whatever they want! And that this... this is our land!
I thought Avatar sucked. It was like a bad combination of Up, saving the rainforest, Fern Gully, Animorphs, Pocohontas, and racism. The animals in the forest looked cool though. I want one of those monkeys.
Avatar was little more than shiny graphics and rehashed storylines. Yes, it was innovative, and it won awards for that. But best movie should go to the best acted, best directed, best written, and the best overall movie. Hurt Locker fit that category quite nicely, even if it was lesser known and not nearly a huge blockbuster.
