As long as there are chores connected to the allowance, I think it's a good thing. Also teaches them to budget.
I think I started out in grade school $5 per car wash, $5 per week for dishes and garbage, so forth. In jr high and high school, it was a little higher since I spent more, but there were grade incentives added.
Doesn't that teach children that there's always more money as long as you are willing to put the work into it which in my opinion doesn't work in the real world hence America's unemployment situation.
That makes perfect sense! It teaches your kid to have something to aim that is reachable but never making reach it so they never become spoiled. Brilliant!
So, if there was a cute top I wanted to buy at the mall, I'd had to starve myself and skip lunches at school to save up. That or just stick a dollar budget a day ( 50 cent soda & 50 cent bag of chips) for a few weeks.
I never got an allowance growing up. I learned how to save (thanks to Chinese New Year) and started a small business with my friends at the age of 9. That way I learned the value of money, how to work for it, and also most importantly how to budget and SAVE! I think that's one of the most important lessons in life.
I didn't get an allowance, and I still had to get good grades and do chores around the house. I had to ask for things and it was usually hit or miss. I think my parents rewarded me every now and then.
I got $10 a week. But that was only given to me after I did my chores and at the end of the week, like on friday. Times have changed now...so you might need to give like $15 or $20 a week. It's your choice as a parent. Make them work for it though. It's not just a right. Oh and be sure to take money away for punishment or if your children don't do their chores.
I did not get an allowance when I was growing up. We didn't have alot growing up but my parents made sure we had what we needed. I remember when we were finally able to go out to eat it was a once a week thing on grocery shopping day, it was a real treat. Kids these days are spoiled I know mine are.
I got $10 a month when I was 14 I remember because I used to make a big fuss about it and it was $8 when I was 12 and it went up like that is you see what I mean which kinda means I should have started getting it at 5 or 6 but I didn't i got it first when I was 8
